The Senate last night passed the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act by voice vote. The bill, which was approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee earlier this year, includes a provision authored by Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet to encourage the use of locally grown foods by nutrition services providers. Bennet is a cosponsor of the bill.

Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet announced that President Obama has issued a major disaster designation for the State of Colorado due to severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, and mudslides. The designation will give communities access to federal funding for recovery efforts. Bennet joined Congressmen Scott Tipton, Ken Buck, and Doug Lamborn in a letter led by Senator Cory Gardner to President Obama last week asking for the designation.

Specifically, the bill would build upon the Older Americans Act to include LGBT seniors as a vulnerable population and permanently establish the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is also an original cosponsor.
